RESPIRATORY SYSTEM: Respiratory surface is the parts of the respiratory organ through which gaseous exchange takes place. A respiratory organ is the organ through which oxygen is taken in and Carbon dioxide is given off. The primary organs of the respiratory system are lungs, which carry out this exchange of gases as we breathe.
CHARACTERISTICS OF RESPIRATORY SURFACES
i) They have very thin wall so that gases can diffuse through quickly.
ii) They are usually moist to enhance diffusion.
iii) They have large surface area to speed up the gaseous exchange.
iv) They are highly vascularized.
