State may be defined as a politically organized body of people occupying a definite geographical territory with an organized government entirely free from external control and with coercive power to secure obedience from its citizens and others.
FUNCTIONS OF A STATE
i) Population: There must be a number of people which has no minimum or maximum that will occupy it.
ii) Territory: Territory refers to not only hard surface of the earth but other things like air spaces, waters, lakes, mountains, natural resources etc.
iii) Government: It must have an organized body of people directing it affairs and who enjoys legitimacy of it people.
iv) Sovereignty: A state must be free from external aggression. It must be independent politically.
v) Recognition: The state should be recognized and respected as an independent state by other states.
vi) Permanence: A state is relatively permanent unlike government which is changed periodically. A state does not change, it is permanent.
