ADOLESCENT: This is a period of psychological stages and development of human being from puberty stage to an early adulthood stage.
It is sudden increase in sex hormones of the body, during this period of development the girl or boy has attained full reproductive capacity of adult such as growth of body hair, broadening of the hips and shoulder, menstruation or wet dream and breast enlargement.
During the period of adolescent, the young people can identify their sexual roles and the relationship with the opposite sex.
This is the general cleaning of the reproductive organs of the body especially during the developmental stage. The hygienic condition of the body should be adequately cared for in order to avoid some health problems which can affects the reproductive organs of the body which can have negative effects on the reproduction of young ones in future.
The reproductive health includes the proper washing of the penis and vagina with soap and water. Use of sanitary pad and regular changing of pad during menstrual period. Regular bath with soap, sponge and regular washing of under garments.
Reproductive right is the privilege that every person have either as a male or female. It is the right that male or female should have over any part of their body. Every person have right to say “No” to sexual intercourse with opposite sex without any physical or emotional blackmail.
CHARACTERISTICS OF AN ADOLESCENT
1) There is menstruation in girls and wet dream in boys.
2) There is thickness of the penis and thickening of vaginal wall.
3) Stimulation of the uterus (womb) and breast enlargement.
4) Enlargement of hip, broad shoulder and chest.
IRRESPONSIBLE ADOLESCENT BEHAVIOURS AND ITS IMPLICATIONS
Irresponsible adolescent behaviours include the following:
a) Inquisitiveness about the functions of some parts of the body such as penis and vagina which can result to teenage pregnancy and early marriage.
b) It can result to anger and disillusionment when their ideas and expectations are not realized which can lead to keeping bad friends which can later affect their well being.
c) Change and development of the body structure can result to conflict with parents, teachers and guardian about beliefs and values which can result to poor academic performance and disobedience.
d) There is quest for independence among people of this stage and wanting to play adult roles and responsibilities which might result to conflict and misunderstanding of ideas with parents.
e) Having romantic or special feelings towards others and fantasizing (day dreaming) believing that things are rosy and smooth at all times which might not allow them to pursue realistic goal.
SAFETY MEASURES FOR ADOLESCENT HEALTH
1) Washing the penis, groins, pelvic area and the prepuce if uncircumcised.
2) Cleaning underwear with soap on daily basis.
3) Washing the hands with soap.
4) Use of sanitary pad and frequent changing of sanitary pad.
5) Avoid the use of tissue paper.
